This slice of Americana is right out of a Currier and Ives portrait. The Village Green is bordered by The old Dutch Reformed Church and the 18th Century cemetery. Tappan has just this year undergone a bit of a facelift with the “Municipal Bi-Wigs” setting aside some dough to put in a bit of cobblestone street sections and new “old fashioned” gas light facsimiles. The very historic, very friendly, very cozy and very tasty “Old 76 House” has been one of the area’s most treasured restaurant destinations. This great spot was once a jail and housed the Revolutionary War spy Major John Andre after he was convicted. Also, the interior is so interesting that the restaurant scene from the movie ‘Stepmom” with Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts was filmed here. Around the corner, the imposing Victorian Building with the “amazing staircase” houses Giulio’s Italian restaurant…also a must see/must eat.
