Salamanders in Blauvelt in my garden

More news from The Good News Blogger, Amanda Grubb - yesterday afternoon was so nice outside that I started my spring yard cleanup and gardening.  While moving some stones in the garden I noticed a little flash of red - a salamander!  I also found a second salamander that must have lost part of his tail a while ago, but he was still ok.   These salamander sightings are rewarding, as we only use small amounts of organic fertilizers in flower beds and on the lawn.  You may even have some in your garden - just carefully lift stones to search.  If anybody knows the exact name of this salamander would you please let me know.  Hope you have a salamander sighting in your garden soon!

Believe this to be the Eastern Red backed Salamander. I looked it up and the scientific name is Plethodon cinereus. It seeks out moist environments (under logs, rocks , damp leaves etc.) It does not do well if the soil is acidic. It could be making a come back in your garden if the acid rain levels are less or if you have been doing some liming in your garden.
