It didn’t matter that it was only 23 degrees, or that we were surrounded by ice, the Knickerbocker Ice Festival at Rockland Lake State Park was entertaining, educational, and fun. A great way to get exercise, fresh air, and learn about the history of Rockland Lake and how the Knickerbocker Ice Company supplied New York City with it’s growing ice demands from about 1834 to 1924. Some other groups participating in the event were the Rockland County Historical Society, Riverkeeper, Valley Cottage Civic Association, and the Nyack Rowing Association. Considered the official launch of the Hudson Valley’s Quadricentennial, there were interesting paintings and photographs from local artists, an ice gallery, warming stations, a green (fuel cell) vehicle, fireworks, live music, hot food, authentic ice harvesting tools, ice boat display and auction, and there was even a hot air balloon. It was a wonderful day with the family and the community. My nine month old daughter slept through most it, but I shot some good video for her to watch.
